More info on the Derby County Newspaper Book
Derby County was founded in 1884 and was one of the 12 founder members of the Football League and takes its nickname, The Rams, in tribute to its links with The First Regiment of Derby Militia who had a ram as its mascot and sang The Derby Ram as its regimental song. This Derby County souvenir covers the highs and lows of a famous and historic club and makes an excellent football book gift. The club started as an offshoot of the Derbyshire County Cricket Club and moved to its most famous home, The Baseball Ground in 1895 where it played for the next 102 years.
Derby racked up some impressive score lines in the 1920s an 8:0 thrashing of Bristol, a 7:3 victory over Stoke City, and a satisfying 6:0 thrashing of West Ham in 1928. All these games feature in our comprehensive history book of Derby County. Because of the war years this gift book only features one game, from 1946, but what a game! The 2:1 victory over Charlton to take the FA Cup! The 1950s set some marks for nostalgia like 1957 when Derby became Division 3 (North) Champions and from the famous English football year of 1966 we have a report of an epic 5:5 draw with Birmingham and a 5:1 victory over Preston.
Other behind the scenes stories are told in this Derby County football book; the dramatic exit of Brian Clough and his assistant Peter Taylor in 1973 and the appointment of former skipper Dave MacKay, the signings of Bruce Rioch for £200,000 from Aston Villa, and Francis Lee for £100,000 from Manchester City, and in the 80s the signing of £1 million goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The dramatic saving of the club from bankruptcy in 1984 also receives generous coverage in our Derby County history.
The year is 1996 and this Derby County gift idea tells the story of the club’s promotion to the Premiership after beating Crystal Palace 2:1. The following year coverage continues with the last match ever played at The Baseball Ground, the 3:1 defeat to Arsenal. Also in 1997 the story of the first game at the new £18m Pride Park. Do you remember? The game had to be abandoned due to the floodlights failing after 57mins when Derby were leading Wimbledon 2:1!
