More info on the Middlesbrough Newspaper Book

Middlesbrough FC first came into being in 1876 to keep the local cricket players fit during the winter months. The ‘Boro’ won the FA Amateur Cup twice in 1895 and 1898. The next year, in 1889 the club turned professional but reverted back to an amateur status two years later. It wasn’t till 1899 that the club became professional permanently. In 1903 the club took up residence at Ayresome Park for the next 92 years. Our Middlesbrough history book gift opens with the 1927 season and Middlesbrough hailed as Division Two Champions and goes on to relate the glory of this gritty club. What makes this the perfect Middlesbrough football present is the detail of behind the scenes stories and snapshots of half-remembered matches from every era. Read how the "Smoggies" made their mark on English football.

1938 sees one of these snapshots with a 9:2 thrashing of Blackpool. Into the 1950s and another large win, a 8:0 drubbing of Huddersfield is reported in detail. 1955 and a player called Brian Clough makes his debut. Clough made his mark at Middlesbrough with 204 goals in 222 games before leaving for Sunderland. The 1970s and Jack Charlton arrives for his first spell as manager, and the ‘Boro’ win the Division Two Championship and promotion by defeating Luton 1:0. A remarkable collection of stories and photography go into making this an evocative collection of Middlesbrough memorabilia.

Malcolm Allison is another famous name that spent some of his career with Middlesbrough and this football gift covers his appointment in 1982. 1986 was a difficult year with a consortium led by Steve Gibson attempting to save the club from extinction, the gates being locked and the telephones disconnected at Syresome Park. The 1980s end with better news as, despite losing to Chelsea in the second leg, win promotion to Division One. Another famous player comes to town to take up the manager’s reins – Bryan Robson, in 1994. In 1996 there’s a neat insight to a Ravanelli hat-trick and a report on his four goals against Hereford in a 7:0 win. The following year other famous players join the club for short tenures – Paul Merson and Paul Gascoigne, just another insight included in this personalised Middlesbrough football book.

In more recent times our Middlesbrough gift book inspires reminisces with victories over Manchester United and Spurs in 2004 and of course the Carling Cup triumph – the first trophy for 128 years. All these vivid coverage adds up to a hard to beat Middlesbrough souvenir.

The UEFA Campaign of 2006 is covered all the way to the final against Sevilla.
