Wigan Athletic FC was founded in 1932. Wigan Athletic was the fifth attempt to introduce a football club in the town following the demise of Wigan Borough, Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town, and Wigan Rovers.

 

Our Wigan gift idea is filled with behind the scenes stories of league and FA Cup competition starting in 1934 and following the club through the different decades picking up action snapshots and vivid reports that tell the story of this, the youngest side in the English Football League.

 

1978 and Wigan’s first win in the football league is reported in full; a 3:0 victory over Rochdale. 1981 and Larry Lloyd is appointed as manager, and the club reaches the 4th Round of the League Cup. A winning and dynamic collection of stories make this commemorative book a special Wigan Athletic history book.

 

Highlights from the 1990s in this Wigan Athletic FC souvenir include the behind the scene stories and press pictures of the Third Division Championship and promotion to Division Two. In 1999 Wigan beat Millwall in the Auto Windscreens Shield Final, made the playoffs and moved to the new JJB Stadium.

 

Into the 2000s and managers leave (Bruce Rioch) and arrive (Paul Jewell), 2003 and Wigan become Division Two Champions. 2005 brings Premiership football to this great club and in August of that year the first victory, 1:0 against Sunderland. Also from 2005 is an article on the 'Silent Assassins' Jason Roberts and Henri Camara. 2006 and the ‘Latic’s fall at the final hurdle when they are defeated by Manchester United in the final of the Carling Cup Final.
