More info on the Charlton Athletic Newspaper Book
Charlton Athletic was founded in 1905 as an amateur side from a number of youth clubs including the East Street Mission and Blundell Mission. In 1920 the club became professional and joined the Football League in 1921. Our personalised Charlton football book covers the whole history of the club including the successful season of 1937 when the Addicks beat Manchester United 3:0 to secure second place in the First Division. The whole book is a feast of great moments and forgotten stories of this giant of South London. Charlton started to prosper when Woolwich Arsenal FC moved to North London in 1913. This book is a Charlton History as well as a fun Charlton gift.
This unique football gift is filled with Charlton memorabilia and players like the immortal Keith Peacock (591 games between 1961 and 1979) making history in August 1965 when he became the first substitution in the Football League. Another nostalgic moment is covered in the two page story of the 1977 Charlton Player of the Year scoring a hat-trick against London rivals Spurs. This unique gift also covers the coming and goings of the managers who have steered this club through many a battle, in 1982 Lennie Lawrence takes over the club and in 1991 Alan Curbishley is signed.
Goals galore are celebrated in a thirteen goal thriller in 1957 when Charlton beat Huddersfield 7:6 and a couple of games, from 1986 and 1989, feature two memorable wins against Manchester United. 1998 features the Mendonca hat-trick in the 5:0 drubbing of Southampton. Another game from 1998 stars the Veteran Keith Jones and his part in a 1:1 draw with Middlesbrough. Star player Chris Powell is followed as he joins the national side. All these small and grand stories build this commemorative book into a wonderful Charlton souvenir.
Games against the big guns of the Premiership are given prominence like the dramatic Carling Cup tie in October 2005 when Charlton knock out Chelsea 5:4 on penalties after a 1:1 draw. And this special football gift also records the last moments of the clubs famous names like Alan Curbishley’s last game at the Valley in April 2006. Give a very special Charlton present and they’ll relive all these magic moments.
