More info on the Hull City Newspaper Book
Hull City Association FC history starts with their founding in 1904. Their first games were played at the Boulevard, the old home of rugby league site Hull FC. Hull City played their first match here against Notts County and in front of 6,000 fans held the more experienced County to a 2:2 draw. The famous amber and black colours were not in evidence at the start of this great clubs history. The side started out with a strip of white shirts, black shorts, and black socks. This football history gift book features several games from the early days including a 5:0 victory against the wonderfully named Clapton Orient and a rather emphatic 10:3 slaughter of Wolves. All Tiger fans will be captivated by the early history of their club told in vivid reportage of the time.
1930 sees a collection of reports in this football present that tell the story of that season’s FA Cup campaign. Our coverage starts with the 2:1 away win over Manchester City in the 5th Round. Then the 1:1 draw with Newcastle in the 6th Round and the 1:0 victory in the replay that took the ‘Tigers’ through to the semi-final which they drew 2:2 with Arsenal. We then skip forward to the promotion to the Second Division in 1933. The late 40s are covered with one story illustrating the pulling power of the club when 75,000 people queued for tickets for the FA Cup tie with Manchester United. Incidental details like this make the Hull City book a great addition to a fans collection of Hull memorabilia.
We skip to the 1970s for action from good cup runs in both the FA and League Cups and a little known story when new signing Billy Bremner scored the only goal in a victory over Nottingham Forrest. Into the 1980s and we have coverage of Brian Horton becoming player-manager and a smart 3:0 win over Crystal Palace. In more recent times, 2005, behind the scenes stories relate the promotion to the Championship after a 0:0 draw with Swindon, the signing of Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha, and the battle cry of “Our time has come” – Manager Phil Brown aims for promotion to the Premier League. May 26th 2008 and Hull City join the elite in the Premiership.
